约翰·丹佛于1943年生于美国西南部的新墨西哥州，从小喜爱音乐，曾经学习建筑专业。1971年，他放弃学业，潜心从事乡村歌曲的创作与演唱。以演唱歌颂弗吉尼亚山区美丽风光的《Take Me Home, Country Roads》一举成名，成为著名乡村音乐歌星。
丹佛熟悉农村生活，热爱大自然，他创作的歌曲大都是赞美大自然和歌颂人类的友爱和美好的感情。因其曲调简朴、优美，内容清新向上，歌词富有诗意和哲理，使他在罗拉多州一带享有"桂冠诗人"的美名。他的吉他弹唱在世界上更是享有盛名。
